CFPUA crews stopped a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) Sunday morning at the intersection of Lennon Drive and Penny Lane in Wilmington.

At 10:41 a.m. Sunday, July 12, CFPUA was alerted to an overflowing manhole that was spilling into a storm drain. Crews began pump-and-haul operations to recover as much of the spilled wastewater as possible. The SSO was stopped at 11:41 a.m.

Pump-and-haul operations recovered 1,400 gallons of untreated wastewater, and an estimated 2,200 gallons of wastewater was lost.

Staff is investigating the cause of the SSO, and CFPUA’s Environmental Services Division is responding to determine whether water quality sampling can be done in the area. The ground in the affected area has been disinfected.
