Environmental Management
Overview

The Environmental Management section of the Department will develop an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. ISO 14001 is a voluntary standard that was developed by the International Organization for Standardization, which is a group of representatives from approximately 40 countries that work together to develop standards such as this one for EMS development and implementation.

This standard provides a framework for EMS development and is based on a Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) Model.


Standards
In order for an EMS to be in conformance with the ISO 14001 standard it must adequately address all 17 elements of the standard which are:

  • Environmental policy
  • Environmental aspects
  • Legal and other requirements
  • Objectives and targets
  • Environmental management programs
  • Structure and responsibility
  • Training, awareness, and competence
  • Communication
  • EMS documentation
  • Document control
  • Operational controls
  • Emergency preparedness and response
  • Monitoring and measurement
  • Nonconformance and corrective and preventive action
  • Records
  • EMS audit
  • Management review

Following the Guiding Principles
CFPUA will develop and implement in a manner to help drive the newly formed Authority towards continual improvement, compliance with all laws and regulations, and prevention of pollution to support the guiding principles of the Authority, which are stewardship, sustainability, and service.

Environmental Policy
The primary objective of the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority is to provide water and sewer services to current and future customers consistent with our goals of stewardship, sustainability, and service. We will achieve these goals through commitments to:
  • Continual improvement in the management of our activities, products and services;
  • Compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, statutes and other environmentally related requirements to which the organization may subscribe;
  • Manage our operations in an environmentally and fiscally responsible manner to maximize prevention of pollution and minimize waste and our impact on natural resources;
  • Listen and consider the views of interested stakeholders when establishing and reviewing progress on each year’s environmental objectives and targets;
  • The regular communication of this environmental policy to all Authority employees, those persons working on our behalf, and interested stakeholders of this organization.

In keeping with this policy, the Authority will establish, maintain and implement an Environmental Management System that conforms to the ISO 14001 International Standard.
