November 22, 2011
WASTEWATER SPILL IN NEW HANOVER COUNTY
This news release was issued on November 22, 2011, in compliance with North Carolina General Statute 143-215.1C (a portion of the Clean Water Act of 1999). For further information, contact the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority at 910-332-6704.
CFPUA-Operations Department staff is in the process of mitigating a sewer spill which occurred on November 20, 2011, in the 400 block of Marsh Oaks Drive. The incident was reported at 7:10 p.m. and was stopped at 8:05 p.m. The spill was caused by a pipe failure of a PVC force main. The spill was stopped by turning off the pump station and closing the valve.
The amount of the spill discharged is estimated to 6,900 gallons, most of which flowed into an intermittent, wet-weather drainage ditch that drains to the Pages Creek watershed and permeable surfaces. Service in this area is maintained and repairs are underway. A bypass has been installed to render this section of the wastewater line inactive.
CFPUA Environment and Safety Management has and will continue to perform water quality monitoring to determine the impact of the spill. This incident has been reported to the N.C. Division of Water Quality.
